Gary Lucas - Gods and monsters (1992)

'Here is the brillant follow-up to Gary Lucas' Skeleton at the Feast. It is an unique sculpting of compositions and utilization of various musicians from different backgrounds and cities. Mr. Lucas appears to have a keen, supreme way of knowing, or selecting the proper folks to create his monstrous brew. Hence, we have the first Gods and Monsters recording. Once again I find his work very approachable, honest, sincere and have used this recording almost like a library archive; it was my first Lucas acquistion when it came out. We also have Gary piloting the controls at warp factor #10 so you can be assured of a very memorable ride. The first composition: "glo-worm" is a lightning ripping fingerpicked floopter that is jangled nicely by Rolo McGinty's vocals. Rolo hails from the group, "The Woodentops." " Poison Tree" exudes textures that are akin to a visitation, or the levitation of women in Andrei Tarkovsky films. Mary Margaret O'Hara's voice seems to spread out and circulate like the delicious geometry of the lovely St. Lawrence river on an autumn afternoon. " Astronomy Domine" is a high-octane cover of the Syd Barrett composition and reminds one of how delicious a vivace for lemonade can truly taste. " The Brain from Planet Eros" scorches the very walls of Gotham as it roars and cries out for more. The piece features Jon Langford on vocals who hails from , " The Mekons." "King Strong" closes out the album and is bold and courageous like red, or Beethoven riding a tidal wave into shore...' from an Amazon customer review.

Zoogz Rift - Nonentity (Water III: fan black dada) 1988

The cover photo of Zoogz Rift looking pensively through tree branches might lead you to wonder if the famously angry and eccentric guitarist had released a sensitive, low-key album. The surprising answer is yes, he did -- at least, by his standards. Throughout Nonentity, Rift sings in a more relaxed, conventional style than at any other point in his career, and he's surprisingly affecting -- the normally confrontational, forbidding artist allows a bit of yearning and playfulness into his material. Unusually, much of that material is written by other people -- Rift covers three Tim Buckley tunes and one song by his frequent collaborator, John Trubee. The latter number, "When My Ship Rolls In," is the high point of the album. Though this version doesn't have the lush orchestration that Trubee gave it on his own album, the quieter, more intimate setting fits the song very well. Elsewhere, Zoogz Rift plays around a bit -- though he hates being compared to Frank Zappa, "Chromium Slit Negatives" is very reminiscent of Zappa's '60s rock parodies. Those who purchased the vinyl version of Nonentity only got the material which appeared on side one of the cassette or the first half of the CD version. The second half is mostly taken up with a rambling instrumental that is by turns fascinating and frustrating, as accordionist Rocky Howard keeps breaking into "Roll out the Barrel" in the middle of a rock jam, with various other bandmembers collaborating or playing countermelodies. It's a piece of lighthearted fun that fits Nonentity, an album that doesn't abandon Zoogz Rift's quest to awaken his audience, but tries a different strategy. ~ Richard Foss, All Music Guide

Miracle Workers - Overdose (1987)

the album is hard to find these days...recorded in May 1987 in Berlin, Germany (a three hour drive from where I live), this is a much more punk rock oriented album. Gone is the Farfisa Organ sound which categorized them as 60s neo psych band, and although I think it's a nice album it doesn't quite reach the same level of intensity as albums like "Inside Out" or "Moxies Revenge". But download and be happy...

Tracks:

1- Rock'n'Roll revolution in the streets, Pt. 2

M+M (Martha & the Muffins) - The world is a ball (1986)

"The World Is A Ball" makes me think of weather. We did the rhythm tracks at Le Studio, north of Montreal, surrounded by huge snow drifts. Drummer Yogi Horton and bassist Tinker Barfield had come up from New York, (still wearing their Luther Vandross tour jackets), to do some tracks. Walking with Martha and me down a half-buried lane, they were astounded by the snow. "So this is what Canada is like!" Then on to David Lord's studio in Bath, England where we spent the spring and summer of 1985 doing overdubs and mixing. A lot of rain in a beautiful city.We returned to Toronto in the middle of summer to find it buried under a canopy of trees. It seemed almost tropical. Perhaps the climate changes as well as the obsessively long recording process influenced the making of "The World Is A Ball", for it seems to me the most schizophrenic album we have ever made. Straightforward pop/funk tunes like "Song In My Head" rubbed shoulder to shoulder with angry diatribes like "Stuck On The Grid" and "Don't Jump The Gun", the latter marrying our love of noise, (angry wasp sounds and underwater shouting from a "sub-igloo"), to David Lord's masterful vocal arrangements. When RCA balked at releasing "Only You" as a single, (featuring the brilliant rhythm section of David Piltch on bass and Michael Sloski on drums), Martha and I took the matter into our own hands. We shot several hours of black and white Super 8 film footage utilizing projected lyrics and primitive, real-time "special effects" like mounting the camera on a washing machine in spin cycle. With the inspired editing of our friend Bob Kennedy, we made the best video of our careers for only a few thousand dollars. RCA released the song as a single and the video received considerable critical acclaim as well as influencing the look of several subsequent television commercials." from Martha & the Muffins official website.

This was taken from my MC version which sounds as good as the CD (if there ever was one?!..) One of my fave Martha recordings, only beaten by their 1st & 3rd album...

KTP (Kissing the Pink) - Certain things are likely (1986)

By 1986, Kissing the Pink had shortened their name to KTP and recorded their most successful LP, Certain Things Are Likely. More commercial than any of their previous efforts, Certain Things Are Likely was Kissing the Pink's concession to their label Magnet's demand for a chart smash. The hits never really came, except that the title track reached number one on the Billboard dance charts; moreover, the single "One Step" went to number one in Italy. from Answers.com

Squirrel Bait - Squirrel Bait (1985)

'Squirrel Bait were a mid 1980's (1983-1988) punk band from Louisville, Kentucky. Their sound, a metal flavoured hardcore featuring pronounced tempo shifts, clearly foreshadowed the grunge sound as well as math rock. They signaled the second coming of American punk - bands of little brothers and sisters who got to grow up on Black Flag and Hüsker Dü without a preparatory course in Supertramp. ... Like a hundred other little Düs across the country, Squirrel Bait managed to make a couple of records before spintering off to form five more bands. Unlike most of that punk rock loam, the members of Squirrel Bait chewed up their legacy and shat out something curious and consequential." Wikipedia

Comateens - Comateens (1981) & Deal with it (1984)

'The Comateens were originally a New Wave duo formed in 1978 in New York City by bassist/vocalist Nic North and guitarist Ramona Jan. Soon after, Lyn Byrd joined on vocals and synthesiser, and the duo became a trio. When Jan departed in 1980, North's brother Oliver joined on guitar, completing the final lineup.

The band was one of the first in the world to record solely with a drum machine, joining the ranks of the burgeoning electropop avant guarde along with bands such as Suicide, Kraftwerk and Soft Cell, although later they would tour and perform live with top session drummers such as Ben Margulies, Chuck Sabo and Zachary Alford.

They contributed two tracks to the influential Marty Thau Presents 2x5 compilation and their debut album, the self-titled Comateens, (1980) featured the band's bizarrely original compositions alongside covers of "Summer In The City" (Lovin' Spoonful), "TVC 15" (David Bowie), and the theme song from TV's The Munsters. Pictures on a String, their first album for Virgin Records, followed in 1983 yielding the dance club hit "Get Off My Case". In 1984 the band released their final album, Deal With It, which featured the live drums of Chuck Sabo. The band also rode the New Wave by appearing on the then new and innovative MTV in several videos, and in interviews with pioneer VJs Mark Goodman and Martha Quinn.

The band split up in 1985. Oliver North died in 1987. In 1988 Nic North (now Nicholas West) and Lyn Byrd recorded an album, West & Byrd, together. In 1990 the duo, again under the name Comateens, recorded the song "A Place For Me" which became a European hit. Virgin Records released a retrospective compilation of their music in 1991 called "One By One: Best Of Comateens" which has become a rare and much sought-after record among collectors of New Wave music.

Ramona Jan went on to become an artist, designer and reality-show celebrity appearing on ABC's "Wife Swap" and HGTV's "Design Star". Nicholas West is a gold and platinum award winning songwriter. Lyn Byrd is a graphic designer.' Wikipedia

Germs - GI (1979)

'The Germs, despite all expectations, developed a sound that was extremely aggressive, hyper-competent, and highly influential -- although throughout their career, they would have a reputation as a chaotic live band. Singer Darby Crash often arrived onstage nearly incoherent from drugs, singing everywhere but into the microphone and taunting the audience between songs. The other band members had similar problems, with many contemporary reviews citing collapses, incoherency, and drunken vomiting onstage.

The final drummer - Don Bolles - was, however, extremely technically adept, and the amateurish bass stylings of Lorna Doom became, through rehearsal, a tight, complex counterpoint. Smear was revealed as a remarkably talented and fluid player, while the songwriting began to be cited as art and poetry. The canonical lineup of the band was often accused of willfully skirting the boundary between genius and disaster. Crash's vocals had begun to mold themselves around the style of The Screamers' vocalist Tomata DuPlenty. Another strong influence on the band's final sound was Zolar X, a theatrical glitter rock band popular in the Los Angeles area circa 1972-1980. Crash and Smear were enthusiastic fans of the band from the pre-Germs days, and the fast tempos and raw guitar tone of (the historically pre-punk) Zolar X are very similar to the sound achieved on later Germs recordings.

The Germs recorded two singles (with alternate tracks), an album-length demo session, and one full-length LP, (GI), each more focused and powerful than the last. Crash was, despite his erratic behavior, generally regarded as a brilliant lyricist (a contemporary critic described him as "ransacking the dictionary"), and the final lineup of Smear, Doom, and Bolles had become a world-class rock ensemble by the recording of (GI), turning in a performance that spurred an LA Weekly reviewer to write, "This album leaves exit wounds." It is considered one of the first hardcore punk records, and has a near-mythic status among alternative rock fans. Wikipedia

well for me this album has a 'mythic status' as it quite changed (or broadened) my taste of music. After the Dead Kennedys this was the 2nd album in the 'Hardcore' genre which I bought, and still today I'd sell all my Prog stuff collection just for a track like 'We must bleed'!

Russ Tolman - Down in Earthquake Town (1988)

"Though Russ Tolman is best known for his time with True West, his solo work is definitely worth a listen. A case in point is Down in Earthquake Town, an album of lively rock songs with snappy, pointed lyrics. Tolman's voice isn't a beautiful instrument, but he has excellent control and gets lots of mileage from a repertoire of sounds that includes growls and yelps. He is often quite affecting -- listen to "Vegas" for a portrait of impetuous, playful love, or "Planes, Trains, Automobiles" for a great declaration of commitment. Tolman is generally classified as a singer/songwriter, but many of the songs here are anthemic rockers, with enough variety and acoustic tones to keep things interesting. Like all of Tolman's albums, Down in Earthquake Town is impeccably produced, and it's a vigorous, personal piece that deserves to be better known" Richard Foss, All Music Guide

The Residents - George & James (1984)

Volume one in the Residents' dryly named American Composers Series (get those tongues out of your cheeks and start singing, boys) is a collection of compositions by two of America's most famous musical geniuses, George Gershwyn and James Brown. After starting off with a trio of Gershwin numbers ("Rhapsody in Blue," "I Got Rhythm," and "Summertime") all delivered in the Residents' trademark creepy/funny/bewildering style. The program continues with eight tunes taken from James Brown's Live at the Apollo album, one of which is the famous minute-long intro. Weird? You betcha. Effective? Sort of, if you know what you're getting into. The artificially lowered voice, cheesy organ, and fastidiously accurate backing vocals are a hoot on "I'll Go Crazy" and "Try Me," whereas "Think" collapses into chaos, while "Night Train" barely hangs on by virtue of its insanely simple keyboard part. It's difficult to see what the band was trying to say with this project, but wondering what they're trying to say has never been a good way to approach the Residents. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

Ph.D. - Ph.D. (1981) / Is it safe? (1983)

'Ph.D. was a short-lived British group that managed a UK Top 10 hit with "I Won't Let You Down" in 1982. The band took its name from the initial letters of its three members' surnames; Phillips, Hymas and Diamond.

Singer Jim Diamond formed the group with former Jeff Beck Group members Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips in the early 1980s. Their self-titled début album, originally released in 1981, spawned a big hit with the ballad "I Won't Let You Down" which peaked at number three in the UK Singles Chart in 1982 and number five in Australia. Following the single's success the album was re-issued and finally entered the UK Albums Chart. Their video for "Little Suzi's On The Up" was notable for being one of the first five videos shown on MTV's first broadcasting day, being 1 August 1981. They came out with their second album Is It Safe? in 1983. The first single, "I Didn't Know," failed to make the UK Top 40, but did well in Europe. The albums have never been released officially on CD except in Japan.
A short time later Diamond contracted hepatitis. Prevented from touring, by Diamond's illness, the group disbanded. Diamond would come back some time later as a solo artist.
In 1986, hard rock band Tesla would cover "Little Suzi's On The Up" and re-badge it "Little Suzi" giving the song a new audience through American radio airplay.' from Wikipedia

Blind Idiot God - Blind Idiot God (1987)

Coming out of Brooklyn by way of St. Louis, the power trio Blind Idiot God had a distinctive, all-instrumental sound influenced by the noisy psychedelia of Blue Cheer,Jimi Hendrix, and The Velvet Underground, as well as heavy metal, punk rock and the more modern guitar explorations of Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth; in addition, the group incorporates New Orleans funk and dub reggae.

Guitarist Andy Hawkins, bassist Gabe Katz, and drummer Ted Epstein debuted in 1987 with a self-titled effort for SST; they switched to Enemy in 1989 for the album Undertow and the EP Purged Specimen. Blind Idiot God lay low for a few years, then found a new label (Avant) and resurfaced in 1993 with Cyclotron. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Zoogz Rift & Marc Mylar - Nutritionally sound (1990)

This duo goes wacky (in a Zappa-ish sense), utilizing electronics and studio gimmickry to the max. Actually, most of this consists of carefully done space age (and new age) instrumentals, usually of an extended nature. The first time vocals come in, it is a spoken dialogue over a musical backing. This is followed by a growling blues vocal on a saxophone-laced, almost progressive jazz number. In the middle of this madness we get a somewhat straight ahead cover of Freddie & the Dreamers' "I'm Telling You Now" (what the hell's going on here?) and, later, a fairly straight ahead cover (although Oingo Boingo-like) of James Brown's "Get Up Off That Thing." I don't know if the nine minutes worth of Biblical-inspired dialog in "Crazed Be the Lord" means anything, but the shorter "You Are Being Watched" makes for some fine Pere Ubu-type noise. A lot of meticulous care seems to have been taken putting this together, and I'm sure the participants are satisfied with the results.
